Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 8-inch round pans.
Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Beat in eggs one at a time.
Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt).
Alternate adding dry mix and milk to the batter.
Divide batter in two: add vanilla extract to one half, cocoa + 2 tbsp milk to the other.
Pour into pans (side-by-side or swirl for marble effect).
Bake 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool completely before frosting.

Notes
Wrap unfrosted layers in plastic wrap and chill up to 3 days.
Use parchment paper for cleaner release from pans.
